Key Lake

  Key Lake Project

Location

This project comprises three separate, relatively small claim blocks, one 10 km ENE of  the Key Lake Mine and the other two overlying basement rocks respectively 8km SW and 12 km W of the Key Lake mine.

Geology

Project areas cover different geologic environments, one overlies Athabasca sandstone and conglomerates (50 to 150 metres to basement). The other two cover exposures of the underlying Wollaston domain. The Wollaston domain is of Lower Proterozoic (Trans-Hudson) age and is composed of metamorphosed sediments (Psammites, Pelites, and minor Calc-Silicates).

Exploration

During the 1970's and 1980's, extensive exploration was done primarily in the area of the Key Lake mine by Uranerz. Regional geochemical and geophysical studies located numerous anomalies in the district and some of these targets were drilled prior to the discovery of the Key Lake mine. CanAlaska has used GIS to compile these existing historical datasets and to assimilate them in creating a powerful exploration tool.

Potential

The potential of this project is for unconformity style Uranium mineralization of both the Simple (Low REE, basement hosted) and the Complex (High REE, Sandstone hosted) types of Uranium deposits. Despite a large number of assessment reports covering parts of the properties, there has been little intensive exploration directly upon them. Moreover, the models of Uranium mineralization at the time did not take into account the potential for basement hosted deposits, making the two properties to the east and south of Key Lake especially attractive
