In late December 2017, CanAlaska staked 3 claims, in an area recently opened for staking, north of Patterson Lake, Saskatchewan. These claims contain kimberlite-style targets with clear magnetic responses similar to the ones tested by De Beers in 2016, but here these magnetic anomalies are associated with strong electromagnetic responses, modeled to be over 50 metres deep.

There is has been no known kimberlite exploration in the Athabasca Basin and limited general exploration in the project area. The Fort McKay-Fort McMurray KIM trend in Alberta is dominated by chromite, but contains also some pyrope and eclogitic garnets. These appear to be down-ice from the targets identified by CanAlaska in the northwestern Athabasca within the Athabasca sandstone. The basement rocks below the Athabasca sandstone in the project area are classified as Rae Province. The Rae Province rocks host diamondiferous kimberlites in Nunavut. The Buffalo Hills and the Birch Mountain kimberlite fields in Alberta appear to lie on the same structural trend as the project area.
This first group of claims have been optioned to De Beers in May 2016 under a $ 20.4 million deal (link). CanAlaska regained a 100% interest in this property in late December 2016.
In 2016, further kimberlite targets were staked in Saskatchewan outside of the De Beers Area Of Interest and ten Metallic and Industrial Exploration Permits acquired in Alberta, bringing the total area of Diamond properties to over 140,000 hectares (over 350,000 acres).
In May 2016, CanAlaska optioned 2 claim groups to Fjordland Exploration Inc. link
CanAlaska’s West Carswell property was optioned in August 2016 to Canterra Minerals Corporation that can acquire up to a 70% interest in the property
